I had this prob a coupla years ago and wound up bailing out on it. I needed a secure notebook and the first two Nokia data Suites would only do Win9x. Everyone wound up waiting for the (promised) plain vanilla modem support that was supposed to be in the next gen handsets. I wound up getting Nokia Data Suite 3.0 and NT4.0

Try a google.com/linux search for "GSM Linux" and "Nokia Linux" as there were a couple of VERY beta and VERY raw SMS packages out there. Success would depend on your handset and your Service Provider's setup of the phone.

BTW - NDS 3.0 on NT was rock solid and let me comm on the road. Connection became difficult after the complete destruction of my notebook. (Dropped a sofabed on it. Don't ask.)
