GRUB wont boot win2k

hello all,

i am really at the end of my knowledge: i got a win98/ubuntu double boot system wish perfectly worked on two different thinkpads. i plugged the harddisk into my new (used) dell latitude l400 and grub would now only boot ubuntu. i tried different grub-options, ms-sys to reinstall the dos bootsector, but nothing worked. in the end i plugged the disc back into the thinkpad, installed win2k instead of 98, and again the double-boot works. plugging the disc back into the dell - it fails. might there be some problem with the bios or something? fdisk -l says:

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 810 6123568+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/hda2 811 850 302400 5 Extended
/dev/hda3 851 1559 5360040 83 Linux
/dev/hda5 811 850 302368+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

and the relevant part of the menu.lst is:

splashimage (hd0,2)/boot/grub/splashimages/gentleblue.xpm.gz

title Ubuntu
root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-23-server root=/dev/hda3 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.15-23-server
savedefault
boot

title Win2k
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
savedefault
#makeactive
chainloader +1

OK, i am hoping that someone of you might come up with a solution, otherwise i will have to throw this thing out of the window

thanks a lot,

Chris

PS: btw, i also tried LILO, which wont boot win2k either. when i install it to the MBR it warns:

Warning: '/proc/partitions' does not match '/dev' directory structure.
Name change: '/dev/dm-0' -> '/dev/evms/hda1'

i was not brave enough to try to fix the table with lilo. but maybe thats the origin of my problems?

edit removed first question

2) which tool did you use to resize your partitions to put linux on it?

3) in the meantime, you can always use a live cd or maybe ubuntu in recovery mode to get to a terminal to reload grub into mbr if you only have one drive in the laptop.

commands are....assuming only one drive
su
grub
root (hd0,2)
setup (hd0)
quit
