Grub Question: How does the( find /boot/grub/stage1) command work?

I assume that it is querying (just accessing a file)data and that this data is stored in the first stage.

Quote:
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
find /boot/grub/stage1
(hd0,5)
(hd0,7)
(hd1,2)
grub>
This out put looks like grub stage1 is not on my first partition which is what XP is on. I thought stage1 natively was installed on the MBR of the first drive at the start of it and not on a partition at all.

Thanks in advance!

The command just tells you which partitions have Grub Legacy stage1 file. If you use a file manager and look in the /boot/grub directory of these partitions, you will see the stage1 file. It won't tell you which is in the mbr. The link below has some useful information. It's Ubuntu but older when it used Grub Legacy.
