Grub Kernel Panic
 

I have a system with 3 hard disks.

On drive a I have 2 versions of windows, on drive B 2 versions of Suse and on drive C Knoppix, Fedora and some room.

The systems where installed over a period of time. The last was the second Suse System (9.2) on drive B.

I boot with Grub and each time I installed a new OS I updated the MENU.LST file in the last installed OS, to get access to the others. That worked fine but recently I made a mistake.

From Knoppix I used Gparted to make the second partition on drive B smaller, so I could test another Linux version. That was a big mistake, because the boot was in that partition and you can imagine what happened.

With a startup cd I managed to get back the first Suse version (9.1) - knoppix - fedora and the windows stuff. But when I tried to access B2 (with
Suse 9.2) I got a kernel panic - no init found. I'm sure I took the right parameters, because As a safety precaution, I made copies of all the menu files to the vfat partition, so I can make a copy.

Has anybody a suggestion about the way to go now? I can always reinstall, but I can also learn a lot in reactivating the system.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you blew out the boot partition of drive B which holds Suse 9.2. I would guess that you deleted the init file for Suse and this is the reason why you can't boot.

On drive B1 I had Suse 9.1 and on B2 I had Suse 9.2

I tried to make B2 smaller with Qtparted. I forgot however, that Grub was in B2................

Afterwards with some labour I could acces B1 ( which had a previous version from Grub).

I changed MENU.LST and could access all the partitions with exception from B2.

I then tried it with Yast and the rescue CD, but this did not function. It is possible, that Yast changes things but did not succeed.

I could read the partition however over Knoppix.

If I make the changes in MENU.LST this does not work out, I get the kernel panic .... initrd etc.

If nothing works out I will try to get the data (mostly already on a save place) and reinstall.

If there is another possibilty, I'm willing to learn something.

Some More information.

As I stated, I can look in the directory /boot from suse 9.2

The initrd as well as vmlinuz are there.

There also are copies from the initrd and vmlinuz files.

Is it an option to replace the file with the copy ?

(Same size, same kernel version)
