grub-install /dev/hda1 = bad mistake?

Hi,

I reinstalled Windoze XP @ /dev/hda on a Notebook, where's also RH9 installed. But after installing Grub on /dev/hda (MBR), the whole NTFS-Partition was completely destroyed, no way to fix it. What the hell happend and how can I prevent this?

Was something wrong with my win partition? I have not a clue. First time I installen Windoze XP and Linux, everything seemed ok.

Im using RH9 with up-to-date Kernel and Grub on a notebook.

If you know anything about this phenomen I would like to know it.

thx

if you installed it on /dev/hda thats the MBR if you put it on /dev/hda1
then your in trouble.

You could try using parted to reset the filetype for the partition.

are you able to boot into linux. type grub-install as root user and try again. ntfs is read only by linux and redhat doesnt have the module enabled by default. a fix is available from linux-ntfs.sf.net

it might be possible you originally installed in a fat system while the new stuff is ntfs

According to your title, you install it on the first partition.
If the first partition was windowsXP, then that is the reason why winXP no longer works.

The syntax to install GRUB in the MBR is:
Code:
grub-install /dev/hda

Hi

I assumed it... I did a bad mistake installing it on /dev/hda1. Strangely I didnt find a explanation via Google, must have it overlooked.
Thanks a lot for your quick answer!
