GRUB Hard disk error on XP/Linux install

Hey. I googled around on this problem for a bit, but I cant find the right solution.

First I have XP on hda and then I just now installed Linux on hdd. I chose to install linux on hdd because I have XP on hda and I still want to use that.

After reboot I get "GRUB hard disk error."

I dont understand why it isnt working. Each drive has a single partition. The Windows drive is on Primary Master. Linux is on Secondary Slave. I know this probably doesnt matter since GRUB is put on the MBR of the Primary Master, right? But I'm thinking I did something wrong.

Anyway I need to get GRUB working or restore the NT boot loader.

Any help is appreciated!

well what I think you will need to do is from windows boot disk or a rescue disk type fdisk mbr this will clear out the mbr on drive c. or you can re-install grub. Grub is put there by default when installing a O/S.
and some distros like xubuntu does it even if you do not want to.
I found pclinux like all the other O/S i use ask if you want it and where some times. grub also works fine from the root super block also.
I have had this problem a few times the mbr was corrupted and you can reload grub or fdisk the mbr.
you should try to remember to make a grub boot floppy also when installing after that it should ask to put one on the hda.
another thing about grub it sees hard drives like this. (hd0,0) is hda1
(hd0,1) is hda2 if you have a usb drive or sata sda1 is (hd0,0)
so as you can see grub starts at 0 I know you didnt ask for this but in the future this may save your system if you boot any grub floppy and need to edit the commands on a fly for booting different partitions and kernel.

Oh wait. Now I am confused...

I put in my XP disk and did fixmbr and rebooted and XP loaded fine and desktop came up. So I took my XP cd out and then rebooted and now it cant find an operating system. So.... Im not sure what I need to do to fix my mrb for good. Maybe something in mmc but I dont know.

I know this is a Linux forum, but what should I do about this new windows problem? I need to fix my mbr and start over to install linux

crap
