Grub 21 Error, tried some solutions, nothing works yet

Hi Guys,

First off, thanks for taking the time to read this.

I installed Suse Linux, but when I start up it just says "Grub Loading stage 1.5.
Error 21"

Now, I followed the steps outined here:
lists[dot]gnu[dot]org/archive/html/bug-grub...2/msg00082.html

However that did not seem to solve the problem.

I remember when I installed FC4 at one point, and I had the same problem but on a different PC. Someone advised me to do something (cannot remember exactly what) with the MBR.

Any help will be great appreciated.

Many Thanks,
Colin

Could you tell more about your system like how many harddrives and what operating system do you use in them? Master / Slave etc.

You could boot from your SuSE CD and there was some repair option where you could install grub again. Try that and tell us how it worked.

I presume that grub menu loads fine, the image where you can choose which OS to start and when you make your choice it gives that error, right?

It's probably that you or SuSE has specified wrong partitions in grub.conf file and when grub tries to load the OS and does not find the necessary files it gives an error.

I was using Windows, but I wanted to wipe windows off and replace it with Suse.

I did have several HD's, but I am currently reinstalling Suse and I have put everything onto one HD so that hopefully Grub will recognise the HD as before there was 5/6 different ones, one of which was still WIndows.

I have a master,and slave.

Error 21 = Selected disk does not exist.

I thought that was clear enough for somesone installing Suse with a set of disks and changed the disk order afterward.

Once installed do not alter the disk order or Grub will not be able to find the systems.

In my signature the links "Just booting tips" has many commands that you can use to establish information of the systems, boot each one using a floppy or a Live CD.

The problem is now sorted.

I reinstalled, totally wiped all HD's and made them into one partition.

The system installed and booted this time.

Thanks for your help.
