Great system, but it can't do basic things? (Keyboard issues)

Hey!

I have a machine running Suse 9.2. I need french accents on my keyboard sometimes. In windows I was able to have two keyboards setup in windows (with only one physical keyboard). I would use the key combination alt+shift to switch between the two.

When on the french keyboard (in windows "Canadian French"

Shift + 2 would give "
Alt + 2 would give @
shift + 3 would give /
/ would give é
Shift + / would give É
Shift + 6 would give ?
Alt + ; would give ~

etc.....

When I switch to this keyboard using yast. All the keys that should have changed no longer work. All the Alt combinations do not work, the accented keys which in english are: '(") /(?) \(|) do nothing.

How do I get these keys to work and how do I easily switch between the two?

Thanks,

David

Salut!

Merci,

David

Normally with Linux, you tend to use a single keyboard.

For accented characters and the like, you can define special keystrokes or key combinations to generate all the characters you need, without having the bother of switching between virtual keyboards.

Note that the keyboard driver is different for X-Windows as it is for the console. If you never use the console (ctrl+alt+F1 et. al.) then you can safely ignore this and just set things up for X:

In X-Windows: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/doc...e/Intkeyb.html

There's also a lot you can do with the keyboard in the console (text mode): http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/doc...ole-HOWTO.html
(or in French: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/doc...ole-HOWTO.html)

YOU tend to use a single keyboard. I tend to have a need for two different key layouts.
