Grayscale mode in X with depth 16

Hello, does anybody know how to set grayscale mode in bigger depth than 8?
Don't ask for what I need it, but is it possible? Thanx

if you already have the greyscale configured, try editing your XF86Config file for changing BPP .

'locate XF86Config'

and what is BPP

I have not configured XF86config-4 for grayscale. I have tried it, but there is only possible to set Visual "GrayScale" in graphic modes subsection. But this visual mode is possible only for color depth 8. And that is very awful.
