linux journal isn't bad.. there are some european mag's ( I haven't read them so I can't comment on them)

also check out online ones too like
http://www.linuxgazette.com/

Linux Journal is excellent, but in my opinion quite technical - it is really a specialists trade journal.

I also subscibe to Linux Format and Linux Magazine - both European mags, and aimed more at nubes/consumers/prosumers. Both are of reasonable quality, are quite informative for nubes, and do keep you fairly up to date with things if you don't spent much time looking at tech news sites.

I subscribe to Linux Format but occasionally buy Linux User & Developer as well as Linux Magazine.

there is now also a FREE linux magazine out, in digital format (pdf)

http://tuxmagazine.com

The first issue has just been released, and it seems to focus pretty much on how to use different applications...and on newbies :)

Linux Format - it has a lot of good info and tutorials and not as much ads. The only thing is that it's printed in England, and i'm in US... :/ Dunno if i should subscribe to it, but a single issue is not that cheap.

But, the magazine is really useful, it even comes with a DVD (there is a CD version too) filled up with open source soft and even a couple of fresh distros. You can take a look at it to see for yourself.

Personally, I pick up three different monthly Linux mags:

Linux Journal: while it is technical, there is also stuff geared for the end user ("Cooking with Linux" is a good one). Has a nice mix of stuff for developers, sysadmins, and end-users in my opinion.

Linux Magazine (US): Another good one, seems to be geared towards the sysadmin side of things. Also, LQ's very own Jeremy has a monthly column in this one.

Linux Magazine (UK): More for end-users. I really can't stand all the stock photos they use in the articles though (if you have seen this one you know what I mean), but otherwise a very good mag. As a bonus this mag comes with a free dvd every month, usually with a full linux distro on each. Last four months dvd's were Suse 9.1 Pro, Fedora Core 3, Mandrake 10(.1?), and the latest knoppix. I think they changed the name to "Linux Pro" just last month.

Subscribing would work out cheaper for you in the long run, but because the DVD comes with tonnes of software, distro etc, its worth it in the end. When I go back to Zimbabwe in May, my subscription is being altered so that I can get it when I am over there. ;)
