Gnome Terminal Start Path

I just switched from Slackware to Mandriva because of user-friendliness, and so far it's been working out great, but there is one thing that really bugs me, and hopefully there is a simple solution to this:

Whenever I open up a terminal (gnome-terminal, for instance), it automatically puts me at $HOME/Desktop directory. How do I set this so that it starts from $HOME directory?

Any kind of help is appreciated. Thanks!

~/.bashrc and /etc/bash.bashrc are the configuration files for (well) bash. Presumably it is set someplace there since in every system I've come across the default behavior is to open at $HOME. Presumably there is a line to cp Desktop or whatever... but I don't understand why anyone would do this. I certainly cannot find any examples of bashrc scripts doing this.
