Gnome on top of KDE
 

I have Slackware 9.1 running a KDE desktop. I was playing around in /usr/bin and when I had finnished I found that I now have Gnome running ontop of KDE. Is this going to do the system any damage or is it OK to continue like this?

Should be fine. You probably don't have Gnome running on top of KDE, but some Gnome apps running on top of KDE. You can easily run both the KDE kicker and the Gnome gnome-panel together. Inded, so long as you have all the required libraries installed, there should be no reason not to run both KDE and Gnome based apps together all the time.

I don't run either KDE or Gnome, but I run both KDE and Gnome apps together nicely. I dial up with KPPP, I (sometimes) use Konqueror to browse but principally I use Galeon (one has cookies set, the other doesn't), I use K3B to burn discs, etc, etc. It shouldn't cause problems on your system.

Thanks for the answer. I'm quite sure though that the Gnome desktop is running over top of the KDE desktop. When I start X, the entire KDE desktop starts up, then within seconds, Gnomes desktop starts, and the final outcome is the Gnome desktop and icons with the KDE task bar and program launchers. On the desktop the mouse acts like Gnome, with right mouse clicks binging up the Gnome menu. I heard LInux is quite the system, but this was beyond my expectations. I guess I'm just too accustomed to the crash and burnout system.

You (probably) don't want both desktop environments running at the same time, which is what seems to be happening. You can run KDE apps in GNOME and GNOME apps in KDE, so you only need to run one of them. If you can run both without any problems, then by all means do, but it might be a bit wasteful of memory and CPU cycles...

Like Thymox, I'm skeptical that Gnome is running on top of KDE, but if it seems that both are running, then you should be able to select the one that you prefer by running: /usr/X11R6/bin/xwmconfig -- J.W.

Well, when I did a ps -d all the regular KDE listings were there as was nautilus,, gnome panel, and gnome ui. When I killed the prcessess, there was KDE all by itself. Don't really know the exact way I started them but I can try to do it again and post the results.
