GNOME - missing panels

I have updated Fedora F3 to 2.6.10-1.741_FC3 recently using root.

Not sure what happens to the top and bottom panel on GNOME session, it just disappeared after the installation. What is left on the desktop, just the trash, home and compute icons. It only happen on root, but the top/botton panel is there for normal users. It was OK on KDE session.

To logoff/shutdown, I can only use CTRL + ALT + DEL.

Any idea how can I reactivate the top/bottom panels.

I have the same problem using Mandrake 10.1 community and Gnome 2.6. I tried issuing 'gnome-panel' from a terminal but this was not recognised, which was very annoying. Perhaps it is there but I don't know where - somewhere not on the path obviously.

I fear I may have to delete my configuration and allow Gnome to recreate a default setup for my user name

Did you find a way to retrieve things?
