Gnome/KDE Startup Issues when Network Unavailable
Normal Startup:
Boot, get all boot messages, lots of "OK".. eventually get to a GUI login screen for Gnome or KDE (You can select between the two). :) Network is not required to run anything, no server needed for login, it's the ONLY linux box at the moment. Network is out: Boot, Login Messages, Long pause while ethernet (eth0) times out, failure. eventually get to COMMAND LINE linux login. :( How do I get it to boot properly without network? I imagine it's simple, but I'm a winDoze/Mac guy who is lacking in time to fiddle. also- is it possible start gnome from cmmand prompt? FYI- it's RedHat Linux 7.3 Thanks, Pepester :newbie: |
Try to disable the NIC at boot or do it from the command line type ifconfig eth0 down
If you want to start X from the command line type startx. If you want to switch between (let's say Gnome and KDE) type switchdesk [the name windows manager] |
I get the same problem specifically when the network is down.
Never could figure out why. |
I added the hostname to /etc/hosts so gnome could find itself without a DNS server and it works now!
Thanks guys, the startx command shed enough light on the problem. -Pepster |
