glut install help

i'm using slack 9, and since it doesn't come with glut, i downloaded it from opengl.org. i followed the instructions, and built it. however, on the third step, where it says to go to lib/glut and type make depend;make, and then make symbolic links of the file libglut.so.3.6, there was no such file. the only thing make did what create a libglut.a. so how do i create that shared object file?
