glibc error

Upgraded my debian box then ran into all manner of problems relating to a glibc error/corruption. No Firefox, synaptic, xsane, freecell. So decided to reformat and do all updates from scratch, did it all last night ,got my programs all installed and ran everything fine. Today the same thing happened! same programs not working--arrggh.
Firefox with a segfault.
synaptic with this:
debian1:/home/mike# synaptic
*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (fasttop): 0x08160f28 ***
Aborted

freecell with this:
mike@debian1:~$ sol
*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (fasttop): 0x08133280 ***
I'm running Debian Etch kernel 2.6.18.3-686 I could wait for a fix to go through the upgrade route but any suggestions would be appreciated!

As absurd as this may sound, when I used to run Debian, the MOC ( music on console ) program would give me the same sort of "double free or corruption" messages after certain upgrades; I was actually able to get the program to work perfectly simply by deleting the files in /home/dymitry/.moc. Perhaps you can try a similar approach with one of those programs by finding the directory in /home/username/ ( or in /root ) with the configuration files and deleting them for now.
