Question Giving windows the boot---figuratively of course

OK, so check this out...I've reached that stage where I just don't want windows on my computer anymore. I've been running a dual-boot with RH 7.3 and XP, and XP takes up a bunch of space and I never use it, so... In any case I have a p4 2GHz laptop with 512MB RAM yadda yadda yadda with the GRUB boot manager. I've backed up everything that is totally crucial and I want to get rid of XP and RH 7.3 and replace them with slack 9. (I was going to wait for the new kernel, but i'm getting impatient). It would be nice if I could save some of the programs i've configured/installed like moz firebird, gaim, and stuff like that, but if this is too much trouble I would rather just have a new shiny slack running on a newly formatted HD. I was thinking of just burning an ISO off of linuxiso.org and going from there. How do I NOT screw this up?

-T

PS
If you have some recommendation as to what I should run instead of slack9, I'm open to suggestions, but help me give XP and RH7.3 the axe first!

I have had good luck by backing up my /home/username directory there are a bunch of profile information files there that start with a "." like .mozilla. Then when I install a new linux system I copy the files back into the /home/username directory and programs start up without having to redo all the preferences.
