"GIF-LIB error: Wrong record type detected"

First off: I did google , search this site and used the "has this been asked"-button , but nothing yielded anything usefull.

Ok , when exiting X I find this error-message on my screen
Quote:

"GIF-LIB error: Wrong record type detected"
Now X runs ok and I don't experience anything malfunctioning , but still : An error is undesirable and I want to get rid of that message for good.(and for my own peace of mind...)

Can anybody tell me what Library I need to update (if that's the case) to solve this?

I'd like to know, myself. I've narrowed it down to bluefish, in my case. Are you running that? The weird thing is that bluefish's binary doesn't contain those words. A grep of the source dir turned up nothing and grepping some lib dirs showed only libgif and libungif contain that error message. But an 'ldd' of bluefish shows it doesn't even use those. So I don't know what's wrong with it. Bluefish seems fine, though. I compiled and installed April 15th and that sounds about like when the error started and launching all my regular apps didn't cause it until I launched bluefish. And you're right - googling turned up much of nothing except that a version of Endeavour2 would generate the same error and crash and burn, but Endeavour's a flaky app, anyway.

Maybe some of that will give you or somebody else hints. Maybe an update of lib(un)gif would somehow fix it.

Not Bluefish ; Opera7.5Beta1 in my case.
Guess I'll take it to the Opera-forums.

Okay - good luck. :) (I was wrong in any case: it's actually IceWM that seems to be producing the message but only when I load bluefish. Ice does rely on libungif and when I launch bluefish in flux (which doesn't) I don't get the error message. Some weird conjunction of two specific apps and a lib.)

Megamieuwsel 04-29-2004 02:15 PM

Yeah , found that out too.
Hmmm...
Which version of IceWM Are you talking?
Now that it's mentioned ; I updated my Icewm-packages at the same day as I installed the Opera-beta.

Hey! You use Ice, too? I think we're rare. :)

I'm using 1.2.14 pre9. I've tried pre10 and pre14 but, for reasons I haven't figured out, they compile and install fine but do all kinds of weird stuff afterwards. I think pre14 had the same 'GIF-LIB' plus a whole bunch more. I should try to sit down and figure out enough to file a bug but I haven't had time - other than this thing, pre9 is perfect so I keep using it. The upgrade attempts are more curiousity than real need.

So maybe it's something Ice+Bluefish and Ice+Opera have in common?

Depends on where you take the poll ; On the VL-Forums self , Ice came out as the most popular one recently : http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2437
Agreed : Only 29 votes total, but it's still a small community...

Btw.- Just did a little checking : It's definately an Ice-issue ; Even when NO(=0) programs have been run during the session , it still gives this error.
Now I'd like to know where that bug resides.....
*goes searching for a fly-swat..*

slakmagik 04-29-2004 04:38 PM

Yeah, I guess it does depend. Cool to see Ice getting some votes there.

Well, if you swat it, post back. ;) If I figure anything out, I'll do the same.
