getting slmodem 2.9.5 to work on Toshiba Satellite A10

I recently did a hdd install of knoppix on my toshiba satellite A10 and i have been trying to get the modem to work.

I followed the instructions in the readme file for slmodem 2.9.5 but when i try to run "slmodemd -country=09" (09 is the code for australia) i get an error about the device being busy.

What could be doing this?

I have done some googleing and found that there are a few modems where slmodem 2.7.14 is the only version that will work so i will try that to see if that works.

Any suggestions/advice are more than welcome.

thanks in advance

I tried slmodem 2.7.14 but without success.
I must be doing something wrong when installing.
I havent been changing the path in the makefile cos as far as i can tell it was right but im pretty new to linux so im probably wrong.

Can anyone tell me how to install it?
I have read the readme but i still cant figure it out.

Is there some commands i can use to find out if it was installed correctly or is loading or something?

please help if u can i would love to get on the net with linux.

Thanks XavierP.
That readme link helped and i think its installed properly but now i cant add the device to the KPPP device list.
the device /dev/ttySL0 exists (thats the symbolic link the driver creates).

How do i add the device to the KPPP device list?

or should i use a different dial program. I dont think wvdial is intsalled in knoppix but i think ill try downloading and using that.

My attepmts to install wvdial didnt work *but* i did find out that it was already installed by default on knoppix

first i started the slmodemd service(i dont know what else to call it other than a service. I read in the readme that you have to have slmodemd running for the modem using that driver to work). This creates the /dev/pts/1 device with the symbolic link /dev/ttySL0 and worked fine.

then i ran wvdialconf which detected the modem at /dev/ttySL0 no problem.

then i ran wvdial.
It initialized the modem fine. Then it dialed and detected the carrier and was waiting for prompt. Then it said "connected, but carrier signal lost."

What could be causing this?

I hate to bump my thread but im still having the same problem.
I have since reinstalled knoppix to the hdd (I installed freebsd 4.9 briefly but i dont think im ready for that yet) and reinstalled the slmodem driver version 2.9.5 but i still get the same problem.
I have added the line " Carrier Check = no" in the wvdial.conf file as the readme says to do.

Any ideas what could be causing this?
