Hi,
I need to stop or redirect ide driver's error messages while my application access drive through /dev/hdx.

Error messages from driver SHOULD not be shown in console.

Welcome to LQ, marudhu .

You may want to add
Code:
dmesg -n1
which will set the console loglevel setting to 1, essentially disabling the log message display on the console.

What kind of error messages is the IDE driver throwing anyway?

Also, please update your LQ profile to update the distribution(s) that you're using so that someone can provide you with better answers.

Thanks nxny,
That worked well. What is the default level of dmesg so that I can restore that back?.
There is nothing wrong with ide driver..it reports bad sectors while I try to read those.

The default is usually 3 on RedHat systems. And is set as the env variable LOGLEVEL in /etc/sysconfig/init , which is later used by /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit to set the console loglevel.

nxny,
I got into another prob now. dmesg -n1 blocks error reports on whole system (on all consoles). Is it possible to block those messages only in consol where my application runs..so that I dont affect applications running in other consoles?

I hope you do realize that the error messages you block are logged in the kernel ringbuffer as well as /var/log/messages ( or whatever it's been set to : See /etc/sysctl.conf ) and are available for future reference.

Regarding console logging - from what I understand,

1. You can disable non-EMERG error messages from appearing the console ( all of em at once ) the way you did.
2. You can tweak your sysctl.conf to send error messages to a specific console only ( or all of them at once )
3. Tweak the contents of /proc/sys/kernel/printk to achieve the same effect as above.

There is no straightforward answer ( one that I know) for your question.

There are programs that you can run to redirect your kernel messages for a specific console at the following URL. Scroll down all the way to section 2.8.4, which I think may be helpful.

HTH. Let us know how it goes.
