Getting external devices to stay put with fstab-sync

All,

How can you get an external device -- like a usb disk -- to remain mounted when no user is logged in and still use fstab-sync? Basically, we have about 20 Linux boxes all running CentOS 4.4 on our local network and many of them have external USB drives. When nobody is physically logged into the machine (by physically, I mean running X), the drives remain unmounted and inaccessible to users on the network.

There must be a simple solution for this, but I have yet to find one. I know that I can disable fstab-sync, but I'd like to keep this functionality as it makes it easy for people to use their personal usb thumbdrives and whatnot. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Bret

No, the point is to not have a user mount or unmount anything as this requires root privs. There must be a way to tell fstab-sync not to tie the usb disk to a user.

And I know that I can turn off fstab-sync and just add a static line in /etc/fstab... but I don't want to lose the automount functionality of the hal daemon and fstab-sync.

I wouldn't have posted a new thread without checking a man page first, google'ing for answers, or working on a solution myself. Thanks anyways ygloo.
