I would just like to say "Thank You" to all the people that make Linux great: The Linux Kernel Programmers (I.E Linus and loose-knit team), General Programmers, All the websites hosting Linux and Linux-based programs, OpenOffice team, KDE and Gnome Teams, GNU , Free Software Foundation (In my hometown Boston), IBM , Novell , Sun Microsystems, All the distrobution creators and maintainers (expecially Slackware's Patrick Volkerding), XFree86, the "linuxquestions.org" members (you are all so helpful), and many many more.


But most importantly, the "Linux Users". without you there would be no demand for Linux to become better everyday. I hope that Linux ends up on all PC's (ok Mac's too), not to compete with Microsoft but because it's the best OS.

I agree. If I had money to spare, I would donate a couple hundred dollars to these groups for thier great aoftware. It's sad that a major company can't compete with quality when developers make programs for free.

yah it would be nice to see the day that more machines come pre-installed with some type of distro on it ... i know around here where i am from, the whole concept of that is unheard of, but it may be different in other parts of the world ...

I think we will see Linux for the general user soon.... i'm sure you guys saw the super bowl commercial or watched it at IBM.com

My friends mock me for the Linux thing..... one of them was going through my bookbag and found a notebook I keep to help me learn the various aspects of Linux.... currently its step-by-step install instructions for Gentoo along with my explanation..... sure mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot seems foriegn and difficult at first coming from the M$ perspective... but i always tell them.... if we had started our computer lives under Linux (i actually started on an Apple II) rather than M$ we would all be better off.... Linux is logical.... everything makes sense once you train yourself to think in Linux which is the logical decision...... people will see M$ blows compared to IBM Linux which will be immune from M$'s threats because IBM has their own flavor of Linux and they produce PC's after manufacturs see this Red Hat and Suse will follow suit and one day you may be able to choose from nearly any type of Linux at Best Buy when the computer illiterate go to buy a PC. thats when everyone you have indicated will get their true well deserved thanks. if most of the world saw what goes on here in the forums or in the open source development compared to what MS does they would spit on M$ and flee to us

Linux is this board. This board is Linux. I was drawn to the OS because of the whole philosophy behind its development and evolution. Its free! Its copywrighted free. If I knew what I was doing, I could open it up and change it to suit my needs. Release it and it evolves again. The whole community shows that "pay it foreward" is a realistic philosophy.

The computer store where I live offers Linux pre-installed on pre-packaged machines.

I think slowly, yet surely, more people are starting to appreciate Linux.

I wish I was brought up with a Linux OS. Linux seems foreign after Windows. Foreign and better. That's what really annoys me.

In say 50 years time, everybody will be so computer literate that Linux will be adopted into the mainstream. Even less economically developed countries will take advantage of the fact that Linux is free (despite those reports of TCO by Microsoft.) I read somewhere that Microsoft had to keep their support lines for Windows 98 open, because so many of these countries were using it, you have to ask yourself why.

The way I see the logic behind Microsoft's reports of total cost of ownership for Linux, is that there aren't enough skilled administrators to manage it. How can something which is free cost so much?

i doubt the computer litteracy part..... my local paper ran an article today pertaining to mydoom about how most americans just throw up their hands and admit defeat to computers without trying to think it through logically.... and how that pisses the computer literate off.... which is true
me: "yeah i'm gonna put these yearbook pics on my website"
her: "you have a website?!"
me: "yeah i got a great price on it.... just 250 bucks for 2 years"
her: "well i never go on the computer.... you should print them out for people"
me: "sorry you have to go online for them, they'll be online tonite, i'm on like 5 or 6 hours anyways.
her: "well at least i have a life and don't spend my whole life on the computer"
me: you should!!!

her: my computer is screwwed up shane....

her: what can i do

i eventually referred her to housecall

me: you go to the site and run the scan, should take an hour or so, then you should install a virus scanner and a firewall

And then, when their spyware and virus-ridden resource-hog of an XP box won't even boot correctly because of all the CRAP they have running on it, it's the same people meekly asking "can you pwease help me fix my computer? Pweaaaaase?"

My friends know how to treat me now, as I only fix what is really broken, adn not what has resulted from their own laziness. If they need real help with that crap, I refer to my friend down the road who owns the local computer shop. His rates are reasonable and mine won't be for those who don't repect it. My time at home is worth $1,000,000/h (and that's after taxes!). I won't devote one second of it for free to anyone who isn't truely grateful and willing to work with the solution. My friend makes good money off this crap and I get better deals from him for the referrals.

My mom aquired my brother's old PC after he upgraded to something better for his video-editing job(and hers was a victim of an unfortunate accident). She misses her Mac...

Hint: install a good software firewall and anti-virus (as well as spyware killer) that have the option of admin rights and set it up to work automatically and password protect it! keep the password to yourself so settings remain, and you can spend more time on something else! (like that would work. new nags come from doing that.LOL) hahahahahhaha!

Seriously, though, if Mandy 10 gets out without too many bugs, you'll see a really nice slide-in for Windows (anything). I've been playing with the beta2 for a day and its already got me hooked (bugs and all). Smooth, fast, and featured (and that's the beta). Its the first 2.6 kernel that installed on my puter that made things work! It fixed instead of broke. I'm getting a happy-on!BTW, Thank you Linux developers and users!
