general question

hi, i didnt see knoppix in the distro forum list so i thought i would post here. i am wanting to boot knoppix from a live dvd and use a 1gb usb pen to save any files or anything else related to linux (i dont want to interfere with my windows config at all) once booted up with the live dvd how would i save settings to the usb pen so that next time i boot up from the dvd i could keep custom wallpaper, settings etc. i basically want to boot from the dvd and use the usb pen as a mini hard drive dedicated to my knoppix live dvd im really interested in linux but dont want to take a chance messing anything up on my pc im pretty sure this approach will not mess anything up also my monitor is a widescreen monitor 1440 x 900 resolution so if anyone knows how to change res. from within knoppix i need help with that too

Ditto...

adamj575,
I am having the same problems. Mind if I listen?
Is a USB pen what I call a "memory key", a USB flash drive? Never heard it called a "pen" before.

The ref said to type in: knoppix home=/mnt/sdc1 Knoppix said to type in: knoppix home=/dev/sdc1
I tried both and in both cases the sdc1 was mounted but I could not write to it. When I tried to save configuration to the pen drive, I got an unrecoverable(?) error (I don't remember exactly what the error said.) If you want, I will reload Knoppix and find out what the error was..........ReaderRat

ReTried

I went back and tried again. This time I used: knoppix home=scan and everything went okay. Creating the configuration archive went okay too. Do I need to enter home=scan and/or myconfig=scan when I turn on Knoppix? Or do I just plug in the memory key and boot?

It might be that sdc1 is the wrong device name. The ref suggests using sda1, which should be right unless you have SATA drives. Probably easier to scan for it automatically.

You will need to do home=scan to recover your settings. myconfig is for system wide settings, which you will need eventually to change the resolution.

Resolution...

BTW, how do you change the resolution in Knoppix? I have found three places where you change the resolution, but, when I change it, the system logs out and back in and the resolution is the same as before...
