General Advice on customizing XFCE4

I'd like to experiment with the look of XFCE4 beyond what it's built in configuration options. On lynucs.org, I noticed the some people replaced the xfce-panel with gdesklets.

Any idea how they did that?

I looked in my .config/xfce4 (from my home folder) and all I see are xml files but nothing that looks like scripts where I could change stuff around.

Also another thing is what is the general way to change window managers but not change the desktop session itselft i.e. like running KDE using something other than kwin? I noticed people doing stuff like that as well.

This is what I would do if I wanted to replace the panel with gdesklets.

Use xkill to make the panel go away.
Run gdesklets and get it the way you want.
When you press quit, make sure "Save session for future logins" is checked.

You have to be using the session manager for this to work, but it's on by default, at least for me.

I can't really answer the second question, but if you read the documentation there might be something.

Hope that helped. :D

On the login screens of both GNOME and KDE there's a button that brings up a menu of installed window managers. This lets you pick the one you want to use for that session (and future sessions).

I'm using KDE, but with FluxBox as the window manager. That's how I set it. ;)
