GeForce 4 won't do better than 800x600

Okay, so I just set up a RedHat 8.0 system with a GeForce4 Ti 4600 card from BFG Technologies. I used NVchooser to pick out my drivers. The NVidia kernel wouldn't install correctly, though. insmod told me that the nvidia.o module had a kernel version mismatch and a bunch of undefined symbols. So I downloaded the NVidia kernel and GLX source, compiled it, installed it, and set up my XF86config file to use "nvida" instead of "vesa" graphics. Now I can run OpenGL apps just fine; the OpenGL Performer helicoptor sim I'm working on runs at 60Hz.

The problem is that I can't go to a higher resolution than 800x600. If I set my XF86config file to 1024x768, the graphics still come up at 800x600. Has anyone else had this problem? I can't figure out what's wrong.....

Try setting the screen res you want to 1024 then delete all other resolutions from the XF86 config or if you dont want to delete them move 1024*768 to the first entry in the list of resoloutions.

Thanks for the reply, Dai. I'm afraid it isn't that easy, though I was trying to use 1024x768 before because I was using an LCD display with a maximum resolution of 1024x768. I'm using a regular CRT monitor now and trying to go to 1280x1024. The problem is the same: when I startx I only get a resolution of 800x600.

I should have also mentioned before that I don't have any trouble lowering the resolution to 640x480. That works fine; it's just the high resolutions that don't work.

Here's the tail of my XF86config file. I can post the whole thing if you think it will help.....

Do you have a modeline corresponding to 1280 x 1024 in your Monitor section?

I had the same probelm as all of you with the same card.

it turns out that my main issue wasen't the drivers or the card itself it was my monitor horz and vert syncrnization and linux not reconginizeing my type of monitor.

go in to your display config find your montor's horz and vert settings and manually put them in and make shure to rename the monitor from unprobed to your manufactures name *i have a gem for example*

you can find your horz and vert settings in your monitor manuel or off of their web site *for gem it was -www.gemca.com

so try that and tell me if it works.

When I had my Geforce 4 there was no support built in so I had to get new Drivers from Nvidia plus set up the vert and horiz refresh rate for monitor.

So i'd do both in your position mate!!!

You guys rock. I compared my XF86config file with the XF86config-4 file that I found on another machine. Then I changed

HorizSync 31.5 - 37.9

to

HorizSync 30.0 - 95.0

and everything worked. Now I can do any resolution that I want. Of course, I still don't know why my XF86 files were set up differently on two different machines and why one uses XF86cofig while the other uses XF86config-4. Maybe it's because the drivers were installed from a regular .rpm on one machine and I had to compile them myself on this new machine. Anyway, at least it's all working now.
