gdm/xdmcp related: there already appears to be an X server running on display :0

I configured my centos machine such that I could
log in to it through xdmcp remotely. But the centos
machine displayed the following error message:
there already appears to be an X server running on display :0

and there are two choices on the screen, Y or N.
I typed Y and here comes another message:
The specified display number was busy, so this server was
started on display:2.

I googled for related topics but could not find any helpful suggestion.
Can anyone give me a hand?
Thanks.

found a similar thread, but it is ubuntu.
so the packages mentioned there do not apply to my problem.

solution for similar problem with Gnome in Arch linux

I had something close to this problem with my Arch linux, but I could log into the Gnome after a secound try on gdm. my /etc/inittab file has got a
Code:

#x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon
line in the bottom which in installing gnome according to the wiki, it should be uncommented, and that's why I got the " there already apears to be an X server running"
error.
I solved this by taking that line back to comments.

easy, effective and still have the gdm!
