ftp/telnet & xinet.d/xinetd.conf

I have 3 linux boxes on my LAN. (for id, we'll call them x.1, x.2 and x.3) they have all received a RH7.2 upgrade. most of them are running a 2.4.16 kernel, the other 2.4.13. I can FTP and TELNET between two of them (x.1 & x.2), but not the third.(x.3). I can run FTP and TELNET clients from x.3, but the server piece seems to be missing, for I cannot FTP or TELNET to x.3.

I did go into /etc/xinetd.d/telnet and /etc/xinetd.d/ftp and change the disable=yes statements to disable-no. this enabled those services on x.2, however x.3 only has a very small subset of the serviecs listed in the /etc/xinetd.d directories of x.1 and x.2.

x.1 and x.2 list about 43 services, where x.3 lists about a dozen.

I think this is the crux of the issue. on x.3, /etc/xinetd.d/telnet and /etc/xinetd.d/ftp do not exist!

did I forget to install some packages on x.3? is there some other service that I forgot to enable? it is odd, for x.2 and x.3 have almost identical histories so I'm confused how I have this situation with x.3 and didn't have it with x.2.

anyhow, any help appreciated. thanks in advance.

run setup

select System Services

if the service you want is not listed, you will have to install some packages.
