ftp security

I am currently using linux red hat version *.** and I am trying to setup ftp accounts. I have the accounts setup I have created each user account there own home directory the problem I am having is once the user logs onto the ftp server they are able to migrate out of there home directory all the way up to the root level. How do I set permissins so that they can view any contents in any other folder besides thier home directory.

What is "red hat version *.**"
What ftp server are you using?

You mean 'cannot' right?

In any event, you will want to look at user chrooting.

Depends of the program you are using for your FTP server. I use ProFTP and to lock the user at their home directories, all I have to do is to add one line at your /etc/proftpd.conf

DefaultRoot ~

Add that right below your "ServerName" line and you should be fine. If you are using vsftp, however, take a look into this link:

Good luck!

I am currently using the ftp services that are pre installed when you load red hat on to a box. I have already been told that it is not the uniform way of doing things but with very litle linux knowledge I have found the built in service has become more easilly understandable.
