ftp download hangs at end

I'm using Red Hat 7.2 (i.e. kernel 2.4.7-10) and when I download larger files (generally larger than 2 MB) ftp or ncftp simply hangs at the end of the download.

I thought this was fixed already, but it's still there!

Anyone know how to get around this?
