I just purchased a newer laptop to replace my 8-9yr old one and installed Ubuntu LTS.

ntel® Core™ i7-10510U CPU @ 1.80GHz × 8
Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics (CML GT2)
12G shared RAM, using 512M for graphics.

Ive had this system for 1 week tomorrow and in the past 96 hours Ive had 3 hard locks requiring press-hold on power button to reset the laptop. Sadly this vs does not have a removable battery.

that is the exact model laptop. great performance other than these hard locks.

I have tested the SSD by following directions here:

Passed both on short and long tests.

I also rebooted via liveUSB and tested the RAM. that also passed 5 of 5 loops.

So if not the drive or the RAM, im now asking for what steps to continue tracking down these locks before I run out of time to get a replacement or at least return to have it re-tested by the manufacture.

Is it worth the risk of keeping this particular laptop?

I would get a replacement.

Have you tried another distro, reinstalling etc.?
Have you tried getting any information from the journal?

beachboy2, i am leaning to the replacement, but the seller will want details to prove the RMA process.

ondoho, what would i be looking for in the journal, also does the journal not get destroyed the system is taken down?

From a quick search there are plenty of complaints about freezing with the Asus S15 Vivo in both Windows and Linux.

All you can do is photograph the laptop in the frozen state and include the photo with the RMA.

Note that you will need to return it with the original W10 installed otherwise the seller will probably use this as an excuse to reject your return.

Considerably better info would be provided by

which requires using a relatively current version. Upgrade as root or using sudo directly from the inxi author's web site is possible using the -U switch, if Ubuntu hasn't defeated the switch. If it has, then the defeat can be overridden by creating /etc/inxi.conf containing B_ALLOW_UPDATE=true.

I write all this in part because I suspect the screenpad may be inadequately tested by developers for good support, maybe not tested at all.

I'd rather not a refund, but a replacement working laptop. Overall I am liking this system. Only real goof on my part was not confirming if there was an Ethernet port or not. Sadly that is missing.

Finally was able to get ahold of Asus. They had no issues giving me a RMA. Just waiting on my call tag to ship the laptop back for repair.
