frequent crashes while starting Xorg
 
About 50% of the time my computer crashes when i try to start X up with the startx command. So, basically i boot, login, enter 'startx', and it crashes: the monitor loses signal, i cant ctrlaltdel to restart, i have to shut it off with the power button. I'm using the latest nvidia linux driver for my geforce fx card, slackware 10.2, and a 6.2.17.1 kernel. I don't see any errors in xorg, there are a few warnings from the nvidia module, but they're always there. here's the contents of my Xorg.0.log:

if anybody can help me out with this, i'd really appreciate it. also, whats with those nvidia warnings? even if the aren't causing the crashes, do i need to do anything about them?

Have you tried with the nv driver?

i used the nv driver in the beginning, but only once while i set everything up the way i wanted it(with the nvidia driver), but i could switch back to it for a week or so and see what happens.

i actually have a similar problem in windows: sometimes i'll be playing a heavily graphical game and the box will just crash(very similar to the xorg crash), but windows reboots it. it's almost like the card overheats or something, but i don't know how xorg could overheat a card just by starting up.

1)
You can have a power problem where your power supply can't supply enough juice (amps). Under windows you should be able to check the voltages with something like MBM or with a tool supplied by the manufacturer of the box. I'm not sure if similar tools exist under linux.
2)
You can tell windows to reboot or not after a crash. Disable reboot and you will get a BSOD.
3)
- start your box in runlevel 3
- use startx -- -logverbose 6 to start graphical environment; this might reveal more info about the crash
4)
some additional info might help
- nvidia driver version
- 32bit or 64bit kernel

PS1 the dpi warning can be ignored
PS2 you're quite ahead of us (kernel 6.2.17.1)
