Freeze when getting into a windows manager

hello!

I've recently installed Debian Sarge on a notebook (Dell Latitude CPi) and I have one big problem... in about 2 out of 3 cases it gets to complete freezes (nothing works anymore) while a windows manager (KDE or Gnome) is starting - after the Window Manager has started, everything works fine...

Any ideas what to do?

Thanks.

This can be caused by very high use of resources or background applications running. I have period problems with famd. Running top from the command line will tell you what is going on.
