Freecom FSG3 - SU permission denied when attempting chmod or chown

Hi,

I am desperately trying to recover two folders from a Freecom FSG 3 NAS. As far as I am aware it is running Linux 2.6 based on Snapgear. After working through the hardwares' recovery procedure a number of times, the state of the device appears to get worse and worse. So I have attempted to rescue the files by using a program called Putty to access the device over SSH.

When I access the device using Putty I login as admin. The folders I need to recover are located in the home folder. Listing the contents of the directory I get...

/home $ ls -la
ls: ./.twonkymedia: Permission denied
ls: ./Sarah: Permission denied
ls: ./Wedding: Permission denied
ls: ./.users: Permission denied
drwxr-xrwx 18 root root 464 Apr 26 19:08 .
drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 408 Jan 1 1970 ..
drwxrwxr-- 2 admin admin 72 Aug 30 2006 .mail
drwxrwxr-- 3 mysql mysql 72 Aug 30 2006 .mysql
drwxrwxr-- 16 admin admin 408 Aug 30 2006 .postfix
drwxrwxr-- 138 admin nobody 5208 Apr 26 18:52 Downloads
drwxrwxr-- 39 admin nobody 1448 Nov 26 1993 Images
drwxrwxr-- 30 admin nobody 2048 Apr 26 18:41 Music
drwxrwxrwx 2 admin nobody 128 Apr 26 18:47 Sarahs_iTunes
-rw------- 1 root root 8192 Apr 26 19:08 aquota.user
drwxr-xr-x 3 admin nobody 72 Sep 18 1994 brian
drwxrwxr-- 2 admin nobody 80 Aug 14 1994 dave
drwxrwxr-- 3 1000 admin 72 Apr 16 13:39 userone
drwxrwxr-- 4 admin nobody 312 Sep 14 1994 webstats
/home $

Looking at the middle two folder names with Permission denied you might be able to see why the situation is quite desperate!

I have tried chmod and chown on the 'Sarah' and 'Wedding' folders, both when logged in as admin and also as root (or su) and I get...

chmod: Sarah: Permission denied

or

chown: Sarah: Permission denied

...I simply don't seem to be able to override the current permissions and allow the folders to be read or moved.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate full commands too as I am finding my way with Linux as I go along.

I have posted on other groups too, so the Freecom support site where the post seems to be ignored, and OpenFSG where the problem seems beyond the users there. So this is really a case of "Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope!"

Thanks in advance for your help.

So no one can shed any light on this at all? Forgetting the hardware and OS version, no one can suggest a way forward?
