Framebuffer Console
How do I get Redhat to use a framebuffer console?

It was enabled by default in Mandrake, but I can't figure out how to get Redhat to use it.

There is a frambuffer HOWTO that you may want to look at.

FB HowTo

The console framebuffer that you are referring to in Mandrake I believe is a simple input at the LILO prompt. RH uses a graphical GRUB startup, so I can't really help unless you switch to LILO.

Thanks, but I doubt I will have to switch to LILO, since GRUB can handle kernel parameters just the same. I'm pretty sure that GRUB switches back to text mode before it loads the kernel.

I didn't mean that GRUB couldn't do it, just that I couldn't help you.

Running the risk of being too general here, I can tell you that there is a table in the HOWTO that shows what mode to include to get the proper framebuffer. I'm sure that if you add something similar to your grub.conf (or whatever the grub config file is called) you should get what you need. Since I use LILO, I can't give the exact GRUB instructions. I was just wanting to point you to the Howto.
