Fonts in X big and bold when not using gdm

This only happens when I don't use gdm for some reason...

The fonts in kde and some gnome apps get very big and bold, they are at size 10

What does gdm do that my .xinitrc file doesn't?

this is what it looks like;
exec /usr/bin/icewm

thats it, do I need something else to make the fonts look right?

EDIT: It only happens in IceWM
