Font settings for non-KDE apps

I'm a very new Linux user and I'm trying to sort out how to get some better fonts running in various applications. KDE was no trouble but applications like Mozilla and Nedit just don't seem to pick up on any of the settings I've tried that are suggested in various howto articles.

What I want to know is where and how do you specify font settings for menus/listboxes/etc. in generic non-KDE Xwindow applications like Mozilla? From what I understand you have to add some widget settings in .Xdefaults. I have so far had no luck messing around with it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
