Followup question on "Useful thread and info ..."

This was a most excellent post. The one question though that was not addressed was: Which directory is the preferred directory for downloading programs into? The article points out that by default the /home/[user] directory will be used, but I'm wondering if there is some other directory that would be a better choice. In other words, would it be "cleaner" to just download the program into some other directory in the first place?

Some materials I've seen suggest using the /usr/src or /usr/local/src directories to download into, and other materials seem to recommend just using the user's default directory. Does it even matter? My thought is that from an organizational standpoint, it seems kind of cluttered to always put everything into /home/[user], and therefore, I'm wondering if there's another directory which is pretty much already designed for this purpose. Thanks for any advice/recommendations. -- J.W.

What I did was just create a download directory in my home directory:

mkdir downloads

I just tell my broswer to save everything to there. It keeps things a little cleaner.
