Flowcharting software

Recently, my college introduced me into some software I'm quite fond of: Smartdraw (http://www.smartdraw.com). I'm taking a course on programming concepts, which involves drawing rather a lot of flowcharts.

Of course, Smartdraw is Windows software

Is there a decent Linux-based alternative out there? There have got to be at least a few developers out here. What do you use for flowcharting?

I TRIED to use StarOffice Draw to do a flowchart--it doesn't work very well. If I move a shape, the lines connecting to it get disconnected, if I resize the flowchart (to fit into a report, for instance), the text isn't moved/resized, and although I CAN draw a diamond by drawing a square and rotating it, I can't dock lines to the points. It's difficult to place text, appropriately sized, into a flowcharting shape.

I'm on a 56k connection, so the smaller the download, the better, but I don't want to sacrifice ease-of-use.

'dia' loosely based on Visio. A pretty good package, but not sure about file format compatibility.
