floppy formats?

I have a floppy disk that is formatted in an unknown format. I have tried to mount it with all the options i can think of,without any luck. The disk is readable by the original machine. The original machine is a cnc mill with a boston digital controller. They no longer support this control and would not elaborate as to the file system or the format. I'tried to just dd the disk to the hard drive, but get an input/output error.
Any help would be appreciated.

most likely its a format not readable by linux.. or without the sources telling you what type of filesystem it is won't help you out either.. got to find out what kind of filesystem it is before you can see if linux will read it or not.
