flash videos stuttering - where do I start investigating ?

Hi

Watching the BBC iPlayer bigscreen (http://bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bigscreen) in Firefox 3.5 with full screen plays smoothly. But any other combination for example ...
iPlayer on Opera 10
or
Channel 4 Ondemand (4oD) in Firefox
... then the flash video playback is very stuttering, horizontal tears, just one still image per second, etc

I want to investigate the reasons for the poor playback but where do I start ? cant be hardware because FF is ok at least for iPlayer.
Maybe 4oD has some different encoding of video compared with BBC but how can I tell what the encoding is?
How come Opera using the same flash shared object has difficulty but not FF? (I've raised a bug with Opera a few months ago but no joy so far)

[Asrock ION 330 (dual core Atom with Nvidia graphics) running Fedora 10]

thanks
Robert

I'd start by finding out what flash plugins you are using for the various applications, and see if they are the same or if they are different. You can find the plugins for Firefox in the .mozilla directory, I think. On many distributions of Linux, you have to install the flash plugin, so you probably know what it is already.

I un-installed the flash plugin, after that neither opera nor firefox would play flash. Then I installed the flash plugin again (10.0.45), both firefox and opera were able to play the BBC iPlayer programmes (although opera had the same problem as described above but Firefox did not). From this I conclude that both browsers are using the same flash version but somehow Firefox is using it in a better way.
Where do I start investigating this ?
And what about flash videos where even Firefox has a problem? how can I tell what the difference in flash content is between BBC and other websites?

thanks
