Hi everyone
I,ve recently built a pc for my 5 year old grand-daughter as an experiment, using an old pc I had lying around in my attic, it's an old pentium 2 (500mhz processor, 512 mb ram). In spite of it's low spec it runs applications surprisingly fast with lubuntu. The internet (firefox) although not lightening fast is more that adequate until I try to load any page with flash animation when it just grinds to a halt, an example is a site she uses called up to ten which is a childrens site full of games, songs and activities. it loads the site no problem but if I click on any of the activities there is just and endless circle of nothingness, can anynoe suggest anyway I could get this to work because she loves this site and if I can't get it running then the whole thing would be for nothing.
Flash on Linux is taxing even on my Athlon 64 FX55-based PC, so I guess you can't do much about it.
Try using a lighter desktop environment like LXDE if you're using Unity, like LXDE.
You could also try using Lightspark + Gnash as a Flash alternative, but bear in mind that they're not completely compatible with the latest versions of Flash.
It's no surprice Adobe's flashplugin can't be handled by Pentium 2 PC. On my Celeron 2000 MHz I can't watch 720p YouTube without lagging, only 480p. Aside from that recent versions of flash crash even on Windows, I read a lot of complains of Windows guys. It gets worse from version to version.
Hi again
thank yopu all for help and suggestions, I tried installing Chromium but that didn't work, I then the tried light spark plugin but that was worse, I checked my cpu type it's a celeron processor and the flag line didn't contain sse2, however according to firefox the shockwave plugin installed is v10.01 but I'm not sure if that's ok
Code:
" File: libgnashplugin.so
Version:
Shockwave Flash 10.1 r999.
Gnash 0.8.10, the GNU SWF Player. Copyright (C) 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

Compatible Shockwave Flash 10.1 r999.
I was still going to follow the instructions in Davids link but I got code 404 no server found when I clicked on either of the links to the downloads so I've hit a brick wall but if there is any suggestions or help anyone can offer me I would be deeply grateful
Bochs can be configured to emulate any P6 family processor including optional MMX and SSE instructions.
I have not sse2 so not sure if ifs sse or sse2 that bochs will allow...but will report later if I know more
-----
reporting now
just downloaded it ....I am on debian sid so packages may vary
/usr/share/doc/examples/bochsrc.gz
copy and unpack it into your home folder
I am not sure if you know how to unpack but xarchiver is easy to use if you
don't like command line
the section I am reading is this
Quote:
SSE:
# Select SSE instruction set support.
# Any of NONE/SSE/SSE2/SSE3/SSSE3/SSE4_1/SSE4_2 could be selected.
# This option exists only if Bochs compiled with BX_CPU_LEVEL >= 6.
so bochs is a possibility
I have not used it so am not an expert but this may interest you?

That is not Adobe Flash player 10.1! That is the GNU Flash re-implementation gnash, which is compatible only up to Flash v9.
You can find older Adobe Flash versions on this page. I guess you should try with version 10.3.183.18 first. You should look for the flashplayer10_3r183_18_linux.tar.gz file inside that archive.
Hi guys
Thanks so much for your help, i'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond but the old pc I was using died a sudden death, however i picked up up another pc and installed lubuntu
and now back to square one, this pc is a little more modern and slightly more powerful it's allowing me to go a little further in the up to ten website but it's still fragile at best, but's it's late and I'm working in the morning, but first chance I'll go over all the replies and report back, in the meantime I'd like to say I really appreciate the effort you guys are going to to help me, can't thank you all enough
