firefox plugin problems

I have tried to install java plugins using the auto install that firefox uses by clicking on ok when it tells me I don't have java installed as well as install it manually by getting the rpm files to install it. I looked and they are in the plugin directory of firefox, but it does not show up in the advanced options plugin section when i go looking. I can't find a place to look what directory the plugins are looking either. Any suggestions?

hi degraffenried13,

I'm not really sure what went wrong when you installed it through the auto installer of firefox or attempted to install it manually, but let me try to give you the steps I've done to get java on my firefox working

1) I went to http://javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/...actionId=noreg
and downloaded the self-extracting file (j2re-1_4_2_03-linux-i586.bin, 13.51 MB) to my $HOME dir

2) I did a
Code:
chmod +x j2re-1_4_2_03-linux-i586.bin
to make it an executable

3) I became root
Code:
su
so java will be available on my the entire system, otherwise you can just install it to your $HOME dir again

4) run the installer now by doing
Code:
./j2re-1_4_2_03-linux-i586.bin
5) follow the installation guide and once completed, you should change to your firefox plugin dir (wherever the program is located on your system)
Code:
whereis firefox
on my system it's at /usr/local/share/firefox so I had to do
Code:
cd /usr/local/share/firefox/plugins
6) now all you have to do (still as root) is set a symlink
Code:
ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so .
if you keep using the [TAB] key and it completes each folder name for you, it'll lead you to the correct file which is called libjavaplugin_oji.so

You're all set, give it a try by going to http://www.dslreports.com -> Test+Tools -> Speed Tests -> select one of the 3 available test servers and see if JAVA loads up :P

This is how I got java on my firefox working and hope it'll work for you as well.
