Firefox 1.0 gets stuck... top shows 98-99% mem usage || Recntly dwnloaded FF 1.5

Usually whenever i open 7-8 instances/windows of firefox.. it usually get stuck & i have to wait for some 2-3 mins or close some instances to get it ok. As already mentioned top shows 98-99% of cpu usage during this time for firefox.

Also to mention Firefox in KDE run even more slower compared to Firefox in GNOME.

Any particular reasons & remedies for it ?

Hardware : IBM x series 206 server.. P4-3 GHz.

Can I ask why you are opening more than one instance of firefox? You can go to File -> New Tab, and have another firefox window open, or is this what you are doing?

Run the "top" command to see which process(es) are consuming the most resources. As an aside, if you are trying to download and open a large PDF file with Acrobat, sometimes that can eat up a lot of the CPU

Indeeed i did checked for process(es) with top.. Firefox was eating up 98-99% usage for during those 2-3 mins.

As already mentioned..

Firefox in KDE runs even more slower compared to Firefox in GNOME.

Are there some tweaks in KDE ??
Or should i stop opening too many new instances & start working in tabs ?

YES!

If you open a new instance of firefox, you are effectively doubling the amount of resources that firefox will take up in your memory. The tabs are there for a reason. So you DON'T have to do what you are doing. Plus it's way easier to manage tabs inside a window than multiple windows cluttering up your Kbar.

Open new tabs all the time. It will save you a lot of trouble and resources.

Need Help

Guys... Just now few mins back, My firefox did get closed on its own.

I have had 3 instances of Firefox running & was surfing some forum sites.. & suddenly it got hanged up for a sec & all 3 instances got closed.

Now it reminds me of IE.

Wht is it ?

purelithium 12-06-2005 04:03 PM

What version are you running?

amitsharma_26 12-06-2005 08:02 PM

firefox 1.0

J.W. 12-07-2005 12:48 AM

That's a pretty old version, and a lot of improvements have been made since then. Firefox 1.5 was just released, prior to that 1.0.7 was in effect. Perhaps you might try upgrading it to see if that helps

amitsharma_26 12-07-2005 05:34 AM

How are the reviews of Firefox 1.5 ?

Shall i upgrade my firefox to 1.0.7 or 1.5 ?

amitsharma_26 12-07-2005 08:00 AM

I have downloaded the new firefox 1.5. I untarrd it & it itself installed to a new folder with the name of firefox in /root.

But there is no configure script & even run-mozzila.sh script doesnt work too. Even though i am able to open firefox with execuatble ./firefox file.

Also i noticed that my previous firefox runs through #htmlview %u command. Now shall i place the link of new firefox 1.5 to the desktop icon target of previous firefox ? Or shall i create new shortcut for this firefox ??

Any suggestions ?

I've not seen any increase in stability in my Fx1.5-rc3. Fx has always been a crasher for me, and it drives me nuts. You're right, it reminds me of IE, but maybe worse because its FLOSS on Linux...
