Finding what's consuming my HD space..

I was doing stuff earlier and I noticed that there was no space left in my HD. This is very odd because last time I checked I had about 1GB left and I don't remember installing anything big. I've systematically gone through the folders like usr, my home folder, opt, etc where something big might have been installed, but I can't find anything. I'm running very low on space right now after deleting some small things, so does anyone know what this space-consuming entity could be? Is there any particular command to find and list directories containing large amounts of data, or something, so I can try to find it? Any hint would be useful.

Thanks.

You can use the 'du' command (DiskUsage?) to get a report of how large each directory/subdirectory is. You should be able to pipe the output through 'sort' to get something useful.

A good place to check manually might be /var/log

are you dual booting with windows? if so, log into windows and do a cleanup, either that or just get rid of windows... probly the better solution.
