The update thing is useful, but it costs. The updates are actually free, but the program isn't. Instead, you may use up2date, an X program that works very well. Just type up2date in bash (terminal). I have removed that little icon ever since.

This might be of some help, but in My particular installation of RH8, there is no entry in the Application Menu that says "Applet." Instead, I right clicked on the panel...

Add to Panel >> Utility >> Notification Area

...and presto, I get the lil rhn-applet-gui.

Just My $.02

Multiple RedHat update icons

My problem isn't that I have lost the icon and couldn't get it back (Although I did have to hunt around to see how to get it back). My problem is that when I login, the system launches 6 different instances of the icon and clutters up the panel (I'm on RedHat 9 w/ Gnome).

I have deleted the icons repeatedly, but when I log back in, they reappear.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Jacob

P.S. Linux Questions is an awesome source of help.

HELLO!!!

I have found a solution to fixing this problem. Go to your run command and type rhn-applet-gui. That will bring the icon back.

scottpioso , I understand your situation. If you just run it , it will gone next time you login. So you say it is not stayed.

Ok, May be you can try this:
1.Please rebuild it if your desktop is GNOME :

rm -rf ~/.gc*
rm -rf ~/.gno*

2.Add the "/usr/bin/rhn-applet-gui" command to the "~/.bash_profile" file.

hi
hate to reopen an old thread
but i'm having the same or similar trouble

I inadvertently removed the up2date icon some time back
and would like to have it back

been trying for a while

Oh yea RH9 distribution-- KDE desktop

I right klikd the panel > add >application > system tools > Red Hat Network Alert Icon
that puts the green button up --- but it just sits there and does nothing

If I klik it give me the error:
Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
CORBA error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0
Configuration server couldn't be contacted:
CORBA error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/BAD_OPERATION:1.0

I right klikd the panel > add >application > system tools > Red Hat Network (the system update thing)
I can klik it to run up2date but I just have to guess when updates are ready

tryed the command line thing and only got the same error as above

ehd

Hi,

Very simply solution, go to run and type rhn-applet-gui. That should bring the up2date icon back on the task bar.

I don't know about that error. I have never seen that but I'm still learning too. Try doing a search on google for that error and see what you find. . .
