How to find out heap size for a PID

I'm new to Linux. I try pmap on a PID, hoping that it would indicate "heap" for heap size, like UNIX does. But it does not have the key word "heap". How do I find out (or calculate) the heap size of a PID under Linux?

Did a little research on this and couldn't find a reference for getting the heap size for a PID. The only things I could find with respect to memory are common functions like ps, top, and free. Just letting you know that your question isn't going unnoticed.
