Filesystemquestion - JFS

I got a box with gentoo and debian installed.Did make two additional JFS partitions from debian and everything works like a charm.
Except when the box goes down for some reason. The gentoo partition doesn't recover the journal. Why that happens is beyound me - got all the tools installed.Websearch turned up with nothing about this.Anybody got an idea what I am missing here before I go and bug the guys at IBM about it and make a fool of myself?
