filesystem confusion after formatting

Dear all,

am quite new to linux. I recently formatted a machine with RHEL ES 4.0.. created partions as follows :

[root@oracle7 patch]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-root
21G 2.6G 17G 14% /
/dev/sda1 99M 13M 82M 14% /boot
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-d01
99G 93G 567M 100% /d01
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-d02
99G 26G 68G 28% /d02
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-d03
69G 85M 66G 1% /d03
none 1013M 0 1013M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-Stage
4.0G 41M 3.8G 2% /stage

why does the above does'nt show CDROM .. device.. How can I get rid of this /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-root....
want to make this as dev/sdc...dev/sdc2.. liekwise.. please guide and please do tel me how can I enable automount of CD's and

df shows free space on hard drives and thats probably why your cd drives are not listed. Look at your /etc/fstab and you should see your cd devices listed. As far as I know, you should be able to just insert a cd/dvd and it should automatically be recognised. The same applies for usb devices. The reason why you have the volume groups is because you created Logical Volumes when you partitioned your system. I am not quite well versed with LVM so I don't know how to revert back to individual device nodes.

See if you have "/dev/cdrom". If so, you can add a line to fstab for it.

Code:
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom iso9660 defaults 0 0
You have to create the mount point "/media/cdrom" if it does not already exist.

The only way to undo LVM is to save the partitions somewhere, delete the LVM stuff using the vg* and lv* commands, create regular partitions, and then restore the data.

As far as automounting USB stuff, that is usually handled by some system process. Without knowing what distro you have, it would be hard to tell you how to enable it.
