File transfers make computer slow...

Hey,

When I copy files (using Konqueror in KDE on Slackware) the computer slows down alot. Even the mousepointer starts to lag and downloads in my download manager go down to 0-100 byte/sec. I assume this could be because of a problem with process-priorities. So how would I lower the default file transfer process priority? Or how would I fix this problem if that's not the fault?

Thanks.

You probably need to enable DMA.

Do:
Code:
hdparm /dev/hda
And then post the output heere. I'm assuming that your hard disk in located at /dev/hda.

"-bash: hdparm: command not found"

hmm... I don't have the program installed, it seems :/

If my hard disk is on /dev/hdb, I would change it to that, right?

My Linux partition is hda2 and my general data storage (FAT32) partition is on hdb1. If I copy to the Linux parition there is only a very small slow down, but it is much worse when I copy to hdb1 (FAT32).
