Fedora core 5 disk 3 - won't pass media test
 

OK I know this seems kinda dumb- just go download it again and try it- right? ok did that...twice... didn't work.

well try a mirror site - right? ok did that ....twice.. didn't work. (for a total of 4 dead cds).

Is there something special about disk 3?

Since disk 1,2,4,5,6(recovery) all pass why so much trouble with disk 3?

FYI I'm using an amd 1800+. I"ve got two hds one is 40 gig, the other is 10 gig and 256 ram. got a memorex 52x24x52 cd burner.

and more specifically :
fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/5/i386/iso/FC-5-i386-disc3.iso is the specific file.

all suggestions welcome and thanks for any help.

do u check the md5/sha1sum after downloading the ISO files??

I have installed without media check before. But it is good to do media check :)

The media check is known to be buggy. For me it almost always fails but the discs always work correctly.

ok I read a bit more on the media check bug

seems that you need to type linux mediacheck ide=nodma into a prompt line. But why bother with it if its known to be buggy anyway and Masand I am so new at this _ i'm not sure how to check the sha1sum checksums. I'm going to go read about it to see if I can figure it out - thanks for the suggestion.

Well to check the md5sum or sha1sum

lookout for these from the site you are downloading the ISO files

You can also have a look at these at iso.linuxquestions.org

lookout for FC5 and see the checksums indicated

next you can generate the checksum for your downloaded ISO files using

md5sum <filename.iso>
or
sha1sum <filename.iso>

cross check the output with the original checksum posted at the site
they should match,else you need to redownload that file

my disks almost always fail, i've never had a disk related install issue. Try burning at the slowest speed supported by your burner, it seems to help

md5sum and sha1sum
 

How is it possible to check the md5sum and sha1sum numbers without having linux already installed? It does not work from the startup cursor - error is something like kernel cant find sha1sum..... or sha1sum doesn't exist in kernel. same problem for md5sum- I don't seem to be able to find specific step by step instructions on this. I have also just tried to install as suggested earlier and it hangs at disk 3.

Well you need to have the coreutils package intalled
I think that will be installed by default

check this

rpm -qa coreutils

also give the full path of the md5sum exe for running it.

/usr/bin/md5sum

Also I cannot understand how did you get that message "kernel cant find sha1sum",are you trying this at the boot prompt?

You can check the md5sum with some utility for windows also,google for it and you will find the same

Thanks for the reply. Here is what I did:

went to google,
1 d/led digestit( didn't use it but it may be available if we need it)
2 d/led md5sum and saved it in the c:windows directory
3 opened a dos window and changed directory to f:/linuxinfo (where I stored all 6iso files on the hard drive)
4 ran md5sum fc5-i386-disc1.iso -
results are that the checksum is not even close to the sha1sum numbers published by the website- should they be the same?

5 did the same and got the same results with fc5-i386-disc2.iso

Also yes I was trying to run sha1sum from the boot command
the exact message was ( for sha1sum and rpm and md5sum) was could not find kernel image: (sha1sum or rpm or md5sum).

Having a bit of a go with the "user friendly installation" at this point :-)
Hate gates and I am not new at this; but I can understand where unless this gets easier, simple installation would be chasing off new users.

If you have sha1sum numbers, you cannot check the md5sum, it won't be correct info

Yes,

md5sum and sha1sum are 2 different utilities and you cannot match those

generate the checksum which is available for that file on the internet

Like if you find the md5sum for that ISO on the net then generate the md5sum using some utlity and check it .
Else if you get the sha1sum of that ISO then you need to generate the sha1sum of that ISO file using any utility.

Does anyone out there have the md5sum values for the FC5-i386-disk....series?

the website that I downloaded from supplies only the sha1sum values.

google returns:
Your search - md5sum fc5-i386-disk1.iso - did not match any documents.

I can now get the checksums but I have nothing to check them against
any suggestions? thanks

Well I do not think that you will get the md5sum for fc5

Google for

intitle:index.of ISO inurl:fedora.5.i386 sha1sum

and you will get all the sites with the sha1sum of fc5 but do the same for


intitle:index.of ISO inurl:fedora.5.i386 md5sum

does not bring any result

So you need to get the sha1sum utility and check for that

I found a copy of sha1sum and installed it in my windows directory. opened the cmd window and shalsum all five disks as copied to my harddrive. They all checked out -- even the ones that I had tagged as bad because they wouldn't pass media check. - now that I burned them to cds using nero - disc image or saved project. ( the first two disks start the install but disk 3 hangs - anyway to check the iso on the cds after they have been burned? What I tried wouldn't recognize the disk as a file.-- but still "I'm smellin' sucess" :-)
